Place of Pectus Diseases in International Conventions

Pectus diseases such as pectus excavatum (shoemaker's chest) and pectus carinatum (pigeon chest) are included in international human rights law. Especially in conventions protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, the rights of pectus patients are also observed.
United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD)
The UNCRC is an international treaty that comprehensively regulates the rights of people with disabilities. Pectus patients can also be considered within the scope of this convention (UNCRPD, 2006).
The UNCRPD places obligations on states to ensure that people with disabilities are not discriminated against, are treated equally and participate fully in social life. Pectus patients should also be protected in this context.
European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)
The ECHR also protects the rights of persons with disabilities. According to the Convention, it is the responsibility of states to respect the private and family life of persons with disabilities, to ensure their right to education and not to discriminate against them (ECHR, 1950).
Pectus patients are protected under the ECHR from discrimination based on their physical appearance. States are obliged to ensure the full participation of people with pectus in work, education and social life.
International Labor Organization (ILO) Conventions
ILO has adopted various conventions on the employment of persons with disabilities. ILO Convention No. 159 imposes obligations on states regarding the vocational rehabilitation and employment of people with disabilities (ILO, 1983).
Pectus patients can also be considered within the scope of ILO conventions. It is the responsibility of states to ensure that pectus patients are not discriminated against in the workplace, are employed in appropriate jobs and their working conditions are regulated.
In conclusion, in international human rights law, the rights of pectus patients are addressed within the framework of conventions protecting the rights of persons with disabilities. The UNCRC, ECHR and ILO conventions impose obligations on states to ensure that pectus patients are not discriminated against, are treated equally and fully participate in social life.
