Pectus Excavatum Adverse Effects on Heart Function

Pectus excavatum, also known as shoemaker's chest, is a chest wall deformity characterized by an inward collapse of the rib cage. This deformity can adversely affect heart function.


Displacement of the heart

Pectus excavatum can change the position and shape of the heart due to the depression of the rib cage (Shamberger, 2010). The heart can be displaced by being squeezed into the rib cage (Haller et al., 2014).


Reduced Blood Flow

Compression of the heart can make it difficult to pump blood, leading to reduced blood flow (Nuss and Kelly, 2010). This leads to a decrease in cardiac output.


Rhythm Disorders

Displacement and compression of the heart can also cause heart rhythm disturbances (Kelly and Shamberger, 2016). Patients may experience symptoms such as palpitations and irregular heartbeat.


Decreased Exercise Tolerance

These adverse effects on heart function also limit patients' ability to engage in physical activity and exercise (Kelly and Shamberger, 2016). Patients may experience symptoms such as shortness of breath and chest pain with exertion.


Early Diagnosis and Appropriate Treatment is Important

In patients with pectus excavatum, these adverse effects on cardiac function can be largely prevented or mitigated by early diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Surgical and non-surgical treatment options play an important role in improving patients' quality of life.


In conclusion, pectus excavatum chest wall deformity can adversely affect the position and function of the heart. This can lead to problems such as reduced blood flow, rhythm disturbances and decreased exercise tolerance. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can significantly improve patients' quality of life.
